When DiveBar was formed in 2011, it started with a small group of visionary lawyers who sat down together at a yachtie bar in Ft. Lauderdale. They came from incredibly diverse backgrounds and practice areas, South Florida natives and transplanted snowbirds, litigators, corporate counsel and transactional practitioners. What they all had in common was a love for the ocean and marine environment and a burning desire to do something different.
And oh how they succeeded! Since that humble beginning, DiveBar members have tagged sharks in Florida Bay, journeyed to Grand Cayman, Dry Tortugas, Mexico and Belize, road-tripped to Key West for Fantasy Fest and central Florida to swim with manatees and spelunk in freshwater caverns, spent sultry summer days diving metal and nights singing to the full moon in the Keys, chased elusive lemon sharks and not-so-elusive Goliath Groupers in Jupiter, sifted the sandy bottom of the Gulf of Mexico for prehistoric Megaladon teeth . . .
Lots of adventure, for sure, but that isn’t even DiveBar’s signature achievement. Since 2011, we have donated more than $25,000 to the charities we support, including DiveHeart Foundation, University of Miami RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program, Loggerhead Marine Life Center, Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) and ROOT Project: Restoring Our Oceans Together. And perhaps our crowning philanthropic achievement, the planting of over 1,000 pieces of new coral in conjunction with Nova Southeastern Oceanographic Center’s National Coral Reef Institute to form DiveBar Reef off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale.
We’ve done so much and yet we’re just getting started. Climate change, development and a surging population present increasing challenges to our most precious natural resources, the oceans and beaches in whose lee we live and work every single day. There is work still to do and places to see and none of this happens without our members. Your support makes it all possible – the dives, the happy hours and giving back to the community and the environment.
We’ve been breaking lawyerly stereotypes for five years in an explosion of bubbles and and laughter and we hope you’ll join us for the next five.
