The DiveBar Reef has been featured in the Sun Sentinel and on the cover of the FL Bar News.

In partnership with Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center (NSUOC), DiveBar has created DiveBar Reef!  Located within the nearshore environment of Broward County, Florida, DiveBar Reef was created utilizing staghorn coral fragments removed from corals grown within NSUOC’s offshore nursery.  In just the first two months of 2014, DiveBar members and sponsors outplanted over 650 nursery coral fragments to create DiveBar Reef on an otherwise barren strip of reef.  As these outplanted corals grow, DiveBar Reef will transform a limited reef into a complex three dimensional living structure, providing habitat for reef fishes and other members of the reef community, including a multitude of vertebrate and invertebrate species.  It will also help restore the reef system that our community relies on for food, recreation, and income.  By utilizing multiple genotypes we increased the likelihood of successful cross fertilization during annual spawning events which in turn increases population genetic diversity. As these corals grow they will promote species recovery through increasing natural population size and the likelihood of successful sexual reproduction. This project will provide important information on the effectiveness of …

One of our biggest achievements is DiveBar’s new partnership with Nova Southeastern Oceanographic Center’s National Coral Reef Institute to support coral research and restoration. Recently, we sponsored a coral nursery tank at Nova for researchers to study and grow coral.  Once grown, that coral is outplanted in the ocean off Ft. Lauderdale beach to help restore our reefs.  We also sponsor boat trips for Nova researchers to further study, maintain, and outplant the coral from their offshore nursery to the reefs.

Besides our great strides in coral restoration, DiveBar partnered with Dr. Neil Hammerschlag and the University of Miami RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program to support shark research and conservation.  In fact, you might have seen us recently on the cover of Florida Bar News and on the Florida Bar website where DiveBar’s support of RJD has been featured.  That partnership started with our adoption of a great hammerhead shark equipped with a satellite tag that will provide RJD with critical information about the shark’s activities (live tracking of our adopted shark can be found on our website). Since then, we participated in a shark-tagging research expedition to enable the RJD team to conduct more hands-on research.

diveheart-photoDiveBar’s support of the Diveheart Foundation also was featured on the cover of Florida Bar News. Diveheart teaches disabled individuals to scuba dive in order to help them build confidence and independence despite their physical limitations. DiveBar funded a dive trip for two members of Diveheart — Jaun Carlos “JC” Gill, who was born a blind paraplegic, and Karen Mitchell, who became a partial quadriplegic after an injury to her spinal cord — that furthered their scuba training and experiences. Members of DiveBar raised the money through its program “Putting Something Back–Scuba Style,” which was launched in 2012.…

DiveBar participated in a unique Relay for Life event in Lauderdale by the Sea. Instead of walking a track, participants took turns diving from 6am until midnight all in the name of raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Our team came in third place for highest fundraising out of the water teams.

DiveBar hosted a program for our members to become REEF certified volunteer fish surveyors. The divers had to study fish species and prove their identification skills during two dives and by passing a written test. REEF teaches divers to collect meaningful marine life data that will contribute to the preservation of ocean environments. The data is used by a variety of conservation agencies who promote the health of our oceans.
